There is absolutely no doubt that Michael Jackson was a pretty bloody amazing entertainer. I enjoy quite a few of his songs - but I wouldn't say I have ever been a fan, and I am definitely amongst those people who became quite cynical about him as more and more revelations of eccentricity (and possible perversion) came out about him.
But This Is It pretty much ignores the controversy and talks about the entertainer. We don't follow a man who is sick and drug dependent - we follow a man who is empowered by music.
This Is It was filmed during the rehearsals for his This Is It concert series - with filming happening between April and June this year - almost right up until his death. The quality of the cameras is pretty good and the sound is fantastic.
Of course the film seems to be heavily biased towards Jackson - it is a homage after all - but here we see no evidence of the spoilt prima dona that one would have expected; he does not appear to be weak or stuggling in the rehearsals as we heard in the media after his death. Indeed he looks to be at the top of his form - and watching him working with his dancers and other parts of the tour crew - he seems right on his game.
Even though large parts of the documentary are taken up by actual music numbers (fantastic in and of themselves) this is a very eye opening documentary about the process that goes into putting together a show. We see just how much time and debate goes into timing, cures and the details of the performance.
The one disappointing thing about the film is just how distant it is filmed from Jackson. It is almost like he is part of the furniture at times, but I guess that plays into his supposed shyness.
I have to say I enjoyed watching the choreography process and listening him to him rehearse. This would have been a hell of a series of shows if it every made it to our stages.
Fantastic.
