Sandra Bullock films are really not my cup of tea - but occasionally you hit a goldmine with this girl. Unfortunately All About Steve is not one of those.
Here she plays Mary Horowitz, a crossword puzzle constructor for a local newspaper who is just a little bit crackpot. She has next to no social skills - so when she eventually does find a dude that she is into she goes a little bit over the top. She seems like a totally tragic figure - living at home with her parents; rarely dates and dressing just a little sluttily.
So when her parents set her up with Steve (Bradley Cooper) she loses it a bit. She decides that they might as well just have sex - rather than go have dinner. This freaks him out a little and he makes up a phone call to get out of the date. She misreads his signals and pretty soon she is stalking him all over the country as he does his job as a cameraman for a cable TV company.
So Steve is trying to avoid Mary as they crisscross the country from one disaster to the next. Meanwhile his onair talent Hartman Hughes (Thomas Haden Church) keeps giving Mary clues on where they are headed because she is a mine of useless facts that he can use as part of his stories.
Eventually they end up in Texas somewhere (I think) where a bunch of kids have fallen into a mine shaft. I'll leave it to you to discover what happens between Mary and Steve after this point in the film.
This is a fairly appalling film for Bullock - one of those one that makes you wonder whether she has an agent - and if she does why she hasn't sacked them. The storyline and Mary's efforts in it are so unbelievable it is annoying. Indeed, if a woman acted like Mary does in this film any real man would be running for the hills - not exactly the basis of a standard Hollywood romcom.
This is definitely something that should only be watched on DVD (or quite possibly when it makes it to free to air). Poor Sandra.
