As a kid I was a big fan of Astro Boy - so when a film was made of Astro Boy I had to go and check it out. Unfortunately the film is clearly aimed at a very young audience. Which shouldn't be a big surprise given that it is an animation.

So in case you don't know the story, Dr Tenma (Nicolas Cage) has created a replacement robotic son for himself when his real son Toby was killed in an accident. The robot has all of Toby's memories but doesn't quite fit in. 'Astro Boy' (Freddie Highmore) as he becomes known has just discovered he is not human and that he has some amazing powers such as being able to fly when all hell breaks loose in Metro City with corrupt and warmongering President Stone (Donald Sutherland) using Red Energy to try to track down Astro so he can wage war against the seemingly innocent people of Earth.

Meanwhile down on Earth we are finding that the people of Earth are not so innocent with Astro being forced into gladiator type games by Hamegg (Nathan Lane) before he escapes and heads back to Metro City for the inevitable battle of good versus evil.

I think that there is too much of the action scene and too little of the story development for me - but the kids will love the lights and action. I'm sure they won't be complaining and the film is made for them. So probably hits its mark. I just wasn't at the right spot.
